The Department of Children, Youth, and Families is a new cabinet agency in Washington State that has been established for the purpose of delivering existing services in a way that produces better outcomes for children, youth, and families served by the State of Washington.

The Opportunity:
We need your child services experience at the Child Protective Services, Family Assessment Response (FAR) Team located in Aberdeen to assess families referred to FAR with a primary focus on child safety. You will assess complex family situations, interview children and parents, assess child safety, develop plans to protect children in their own homes when needed, and offer services to children and families.

This job interprets and translates for residents/clients whose primary language is Spanish and with limited proficiency in English. The selected applicant must be proficient in Spanish language translation and interpretation at the time of hire.

Some of what you will do:

  • Provide written and verbal translation/interpretation for residents whose primary language is Spanish
  • Apply child welfare practice principles, laws, rules and policy in assessing and intervening on assigned intakes or cases to protect children and deliver needed services to families referred to FAR
  • Assess assigned FAR intakes alleging neglect of children and/or low risk physical abuse to include interviewing children, family members and collateral sources to gather information necessary to assess child safety and determine service needs of the family
  • Develop and implement strengths-based and client-involved service plans, collaboratively with others, that protect children from harm
  • Coordinate case assessment actions with key individuals including parents, relatives, other social workers, service providers, extended family, medical professionals, education professionals and other community professionals
  • Conduct visits in the home of the child, parent and caregiver
  • Work with a diverse population, which may include military and/or Native American families, follows Indian Child Welfare policies
  • Document case activities and maintain case records in the electronic case management system (currently Famlink)

What we are looking for:
Professionals with one year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 2
Bachelor's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or an allied field, and three years of paid social service experience performing functions equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2.
Master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or an allied field and two years of paid social service experience equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2. A practicum will be substituted for the one year of paid social service experience

Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution.

  • Engage children and families under difficult circumstances, to gather information to make accurate and precise decisions
  • Proven ability to identify problems, develop and implement solutions
  • Ability to communicate information both orally and in writing so others will understand
  • Ability to remain calm when being confronted and to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others
