Job Description

As a member of the Operating Room team will function in the scrub role and will monitor and maintain aseptic, technique, equipment, supplies and instruments. H/She will be responsible to receive, wash, inspect, prepare, sterilize and store instruments, trays, equipment and supplies according to policy and procedures.


Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED

Communication skills training (inclusive of written and verbal skills).

At least 2 years (or equivalent experience: 1 year experience, plus related associate degree or surgical technologist certification from an accredited program).

Required Skills/Knowledge

Knowledge of aseptic technique. Basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Human relations and interpersonal skills. Ability to identify the basic surgical instruments by type, function and name. Ability to identify major types of surgical intervention materials (i.e. catheters, drains, sheeting material, grafting material, sutures, stapling devices) their preparation and usage in specific surgical procedures. Be able to dentify the principles of sterile technique. Demonstrate a surgical conscience at all times. Demonstrates anatomical and physiological knowledge for specified surgical procedures. Demonstrates organizational skills preparing for surgical cases.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Certification in AST preferable.

Functional Accountabilities

Clinical/Surgical Case Preparedness Competency
  1. Prepare the Operating Room for surgical procedures; open supplies and equipment on the sterile field based on the surgical procedures and child's age.
  2. Identify, select, and handle the appropriate types of accessory and specialty equipment needed for surgical procedure; apply the appropriate method of care and handling of surgical instruments.
  3. Select and apply appropriate draping material for surgical procedures according to type of procedure and age of child.
  4. Identify and prepare basic sterile packs and trays.
Aseptic Technique
  1. Apply the correct technique of disinfection and follow manufacturer protocol.
  2. Utilize the appropriate sterilizer for sterilization purposes (i.e. flash sterilizer vs. washer sterilizer).
  3. Maintain highest standards of sterile technique during operative procedure.
  4. Maintain surveillance of sterilization; maintain and monitor the daily records and indicators; follow recall and procedures.
Scrub Role Competency
  1. Follow principle of correct hand scrub; gown and glove self and other intraoperative members.
  2. Pass correct instrumentation, supplies, as needed by the surgical team; prepare irrigation and medication solutions as needed by the surgical team.
  3. Follow established policy and procedure for all counts; initiate corrective action when counts are incorrect.
  4. Anticipate emergency or unusual circumstances (ie: trauma).
  5. Anticipate the need of the surgical team.

  2. Count instruments, sponges, needles and other items as indicated by unit/hospital policy.
  3. Properly store and rotate sterile supplies in the O.R. and sterile processing to maintain integrity of supplies.
